Research and Writing for True Crime Podcasts

My approach to research is rooted in thoroughness and sensitivity. For each case, I conduct in-depth research, cross-referencing multiple sources to ensure factual accuracy. My goal is to produce work that respects victims and their lives without sensationalism, focusing instead on the human aspects of each story.

I work closely with both podcast hosts and families, collaborating to create accurate portrayals that align with ethical standards and bring respectful attention to each victim’s life and legacy. Through this partnership, I help families share their loved ones’ stories, ensuring their voices are honored and thoughtfully represented in the true crime community.

Advocacy and Family Support

Supporting families impacted by cold cases is at the heart of my work. I collaborate closely with families to raise awareness of their loved ones’ cases through respectful coverage, press materials, and additional advocacy efforts. My approach is centered on actively listening to understand each family’s specific needs and goals, ensuring that public attention remains sensitive and aligned with their wishes.

As part of this partnership, I design awareness materials, including flyers, business cards, and postcards, and collaborate with families to create comprehensive research documents that can be shared with media outlets and podcasts. I also craft tailored press releases to gain media coverage and amplify their loved one’s story, honoring their memory while supporting efforts to keep the case in the public eye.

Training and Education

As the Founder of True Crime Podcast Training, I provide educational resources for those dedicated to research within the true crime community. Through webinars, live research sessions, and a structured training program, I guide aspiring researchers and creators in best practices for ethical, victim-centered research. The program covers essential topics, from effective research techniques to using empowering language and maintaining ethical standards in true crime work.

In addition to training creators, I am deeply passionate about educating families impacted by cold cases. Whether helping them learn how to craft press releases to secure additional media coverage or sharing strategies to protect themselves when working with creators, I aim to empower families with tools and knowledge that amplify their advocacy efforts while safeguarding their rights.

Some of the training topics I’ve provided include:

How to Write Press Releases: In 2024, I co-hosted a webinar for Light the Way guiding families, creators, and advocates in crafting compelling press releases to secure media attention and amplify advocacy efforts.

Guidebook to Working with Families: At the 2024 True Crime Podcast Festival, I spoke on a panel based on Collaborating for Justice: A Guide for Families and Creators Spreading Awareness of Unsolved Cases, a guidebook I co-authored. The panel focused on best practices for collaborating with families in true crime advocacy, emphasizing ethical approaches to sharing their stories and raising awareness.

True Crime from a Family Member’s Perspective: In 2024, I co-hosted a webinar for True Crime Podcast Training that explored how families experience true crime and how creators can better support them.

Speaking Engagements

In addition to providing training and education, I have had the privilege of participating in panels that explore ethics in true crime. I believe it’s essential to have open, ongoing conversations about what ethical true crime looks like—from both a podcaster’s perspective and a family’s. Ethics in true crime are constantly evolving, and fostering dialogue allows us to adapt and improve how we honor victims, support families, and present cases responsibly.

By addressing topics such as navigating advocacy with sensitivity, equipping families with tools to raise awareness, and promoting ethical practices, my goal is to inspire meaningful change and encourage best practices in the true crime community.

Recent Speaking Engagements:

Navigating Ethics in True Crime: In 2023, I joined a Season of Justice panel titled “Navigating Ethical Advocacy in True Crime.” The discussion emphasized the ethical responsibility to give back to families and victims, focusing on compassion and integrity in true crime advocacy.

True Advocacy in a True Crime World: For the National Organization for Victim Advocacy (NOVA) in 2024, I participated in a panel discussion titled “True Advocacy in a True Crime World.” We explored ethical approaches to true crime and best practices for advocacy within the field.
