Research and Writing for True Crime Podcasts

My approach to research is rooted in thoroughness and sensitivity. For each case, I conduct in-depth research, cross-referencing multiple sources to ensure factual accuracy. My goal is to produce work that respects victims and their lives without sensationalism, focusing instead on the human aspects of each story.

I work closely with both podcast hosts and families, collaborating to create accurate portrayals that align with ethical standards and bring respectful attention to each victim’s life and legacy. Through this partnership, I help families share their loved ones’ stories, ensuring their voices are honored and thoughtfully represented in the true crime community.

Advocacy and Family Support

Supporting families impacted by cold cases is at the heart of my work. I collaborate closely with families to raise awareness of their loved ones’ cases through respectful coverage, press materials, and additional advocacy efforts. My approach is centered on actively listening to understand each family’s specific needs and goals, ensuring that public attention remains sensitive and aligned with their wishes.

As part of this partnership, I design awareness materials, including flyers, business cards, and postcards, and collaborate with families to create comprehensive research documents that can be shared with media outlets and podcasts. I also craft tailored press releases to gain media coverage and amplify their loved one’s story, honoring their memory while supporting efforts to keep the case in the public eye.

Training and Education

At my company, True Crime Research Training (TCRT), we offer flexible, self-paced online programs for those committed to ethical, victim-centered true crime research and advocacy. Our 100% online courses are designed for both professionals and families, providing practical tools, investigative techniques, and responsible storytelling strategies.

For professionals—whether you’re launching a podcast, producing a YouTube series or documentary, or enhancing your investigative work as a genealogist, content creator, or advocate—our Standard Course equips you with the research skills and ethical foundation needed to approach each case with care and accuracy.

For families and advocates, we offer The Advocacy Blueprint—a program created specifically for families of missing and murdered loved ones and the advocates who support them. This training offers guidance on navigating complex systems, securing media coverage, working safely with creators, and taking meaningful action in each case.

At TCRT, our mission is to empower anyone—whether they’re seeking answers for their own family or creating content for a wider audience—to approach this work with integrity, empathy, and a deep commitment to justice.

Speaking Engagements

In addition to providing training and education, I have had the privilege of participating in panels that explore ethics in true crime. I believe it’s essential to have open, ongoing conversations about what ethical true crime looks like—from both a podcaster’s perspective and a family’s. Ethics in true crime are constantly evolving, and fostering dialogue allows us to adapt and improve how we honor victims, support families, and present cases responsibly.

By addressing topics such as navigating advocacy with sensitivity, equipping families with tools to raise awareness, and promoting ethical practices, my goal is to inspire meaningful change and encourage best practices in the true crime community.

Recent Speaking Engagements:

Navigating Ethics in True Crime: In 2023, I joined a Season of Justice panel titled “Navigating Ethical Advocacy in True Crime.” The discussion emphasized the ethical responsibility to give back to families and victims, focusing on compassion and integrity in true crime advocacy.

True Advocacy in a True Crime World: For the National Organization for Victim Advocacy (NOVA) in 2024, I participated in a panel discussion titled “True Advocacy in a True Crime World.” We explored ethical approaches to true crime and best practices for advocacy within the field.

AdvocacyCon: In March 2025, I attended AdvocacyCon—a national conference dedicated to supporting families of missing and murdered loved ones. As a co-host, I led multiple sessions, including one focused on teaching families how to file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and another on how families can self-advocate for their loved one’s case. Each session was designed to provide clear, actionable steps while fostering a sense of empowerment, community, and shared purpose.
